The Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique is a form of physical therapy developed by F.M. Alexander, an
Australian actor who lived from 1869 to 1955. Alexander was touring Tasmania and Australia
with a Shakespearean troupe when he began experiencing issues with his voice. To find a
solution, he developed the Alexander Technique, which has since been used to help individuals
improve posture, balance, and coordination.
F.M. Alexander developed the Alexander Technique after experiencing problems with his voice
while touring as an actor. Despite seeking treatment from multiple doctors, none of them were
able to find a physical cause for the hoarseness.
After being unable to find a solution to his vocal issues through traditional medical treatment,
F.M. Alexander began closely observing his movements and habits. He spent several years
researching and experimenting, eventually developing the Alexander Technique. Although the
technique is now known as the Alexander Technique, Alexander initially referred to it as "primary
control." This system successfully restored Alexander's voice, which was essential to his career
as an actor.
The Alexander Technique is based on the idea that the head, neck, and torso are vital in
determining function, movement, and posture. Through his observations and experimentation,
F.M. Alexander discovered that compressing these body parts can lead to misalignment and
impaired functioning in the body. In Alexander's case, this resulted in poor posture and vocal
problems. However, he also saw that the Alexander Technique (also known as primary control)
could be beneficial for addressing a range of issues beyond his own.
The Alexander Technique is now widely used in clinics throughout the country and is taught to
people of all ages. It is available to anyone interested in learning it.
Alexander Technique treatment aims to use physical therapy techniques and education to help
individuals improve their body use and overall functioning. This is accomplished through
one-on-one sessions with a trained practitioner. Although group instruction is common,
Alexander Technique practitioners typically work with individuals rather than groups.
The Alexander Technique is a specialized form of physical therapy that focuses on improving
posture and addressing related issues. The Alexander Technique is best suited for individuals
with minor problems seeking to improve their posture and overall functioning. While it can be
effective for people with minor issues, it is generally not recommended for individuals with
significant disabilities or illnesses. In these cases, other forms of physical therapy may be more
appropriate.
